Getting Organized
What Does a Professional Organizer Do?
When I meet with new clients, they are often not sure what types of services I provide. While different organizers have different areas of specialization, there are some general services you will get when you seek out the help of a pro. Here’s a summary of what to expect when you hire someone like me:
Decluttering – Most people who contact me have too much stuff but struggle to part with things. An organizer will work with you one on one to make decisions about what to keep and what to toss, providing motivation and prompting you with questions that can help shift your thinking about your possessions.
Setting up systems – What do you do with all the paperwork that makes its way into your home? Or when you receive notice of your kid’s sports schedule? Pro organizers are skilled at setting up systems for managing your stuff and your time, so when new things are introduced you have a plan in place to deal with them.
Storage space solutions – It can be difficult to see the potential of your space because you are so used to using it in one specific way. An organizer thinks creatively about space and will suggest new ways to store and arrange items in your home that you haven’t thought of. I enjoy helping clients repurpose the furniture and containers they already own to make improvements without buying anything.
Space planning – An organizer can set up spaces in your home, so they function well for their intended purpose. Do you have an awkward kitchen layout, or a multipurpose room and you need advice on how to best set it up? A pro can see your home with fresh eyes and help you make the most of it.
Personalized solutions – Not every product or system works for every person, so a professional will ask you questions about your preferences and make suggestions for your specific needs and personality. If you’ve made attempts at getting organized in the past but never follow through, a pro can design a system you'll be able to maintain.
